Murcia San Javier Airport Information

Airport Location

Murcia Airport, formally known as the San Javier Murcia Airport is located near the town of San Javier around 25km to the south east of Murcia. The airport is a great deal smaller than Alicante Airport. Over the last decade the airport has been renovated, but due to the fact that it is both a military and civilian airport it is only open to passenger flights after 15:00 during the weekdays. During the weekend however flights come in and out of the airport on a regular basis.

There are a number of budget airlines operating at Murcia Airport, many from the UK, making it a cost effective choice with only about a 2-2.5 hour flight time from the UK. Be aware of the fact however that the airport is at least thirty minutes to forty minutes away from Murcia, although it does provide quick access to the coastal resort towns of Torre-Pacheco, San Javier, Pillar de la Horadada, and Torrevieja.

Arrival/Departure Information

All flights arrive on the ground floor of the terminal which is also where the car hire companies and the local tourist kiosk is located. The departures area is very small with only five boarding gates used for passenger flights making it easy to find your flight. Due the size of the airport, an hour and a half should be plenty of time to arrive before your flight without any problems at security or checking in. During the peak holiday season you may want to arrive a little earlier but there should still not be much difficulty getting to your flight with plenty of time to spare.

Transport Options To/From the Airport

Taxi

Due to the fact that there is only one bus line and no train service to the Murcia airport most people choose to take a taxi or hire a car from the airport. The taxi rank can be found directly outside of the arrival terminal exit, and due to the fact that the airport is small with limited flights finding a taxi is usually a quick process. Most taxis only carry four people at a time so if your group is larger you will need to book a private transfer or consider hiring a car.

Taxis run both according to a metre and a set price, so it is best to ask the cost of your fare before leaving the airport. As a guideline, you should expect to pay about 1.20 euro per every kilometre which makes a trip to Alicante cost about 110 euro while nearby towns such as Murcia City will cost you around 55 euro.

Bus

There is only one bus line that runs between the Murcia Airport to Santiago de la Ribera where you can connect to many other cities such as Campoamor, Murcia, Alicante, and Cartagena via further bus lines or train lines. Buses depart three items a day to coincide with flight times so finding a bus after your flight should not be a problem although you may want to check a schedule before arriving if you plan to use this mode of transportation.

Trains

There are no trains from Murcia Airport, but you can take the bus service or taxi into Santiago de la Ribera to access a transportation hub where plenty of rail options to further destinations are available.

Car Hire

The airport has good road links, with the Mar Meno A-37 motorway runs right by it linking it to the main A7. If you would like to hire a car at Murcia airport, please use our quote comparison to find a quote.

Airport Amenities

Murcia Airport offers all of the general amenities that you would expect to find within any airport including an informational tourist kiosk, ATM machines, a Change Bureau, and free wi-fi from the terminal café.

Guide to Airport Shopping

Given the limited size of the airport it should come as no surprise that the shopping and dining options are limited. In terms of shopping the only duty free shop is located in the public space and passenger space and is called Merlia where you can purchase cigarettes, perfumes, alcohol, and souvenirs. In the passenger zones you can also visit the Delicatium for snacks, the Iberica Negocentro for gifts, and the Las Lilas for small boutique fashions.

In terms of food there are only two choices, the Cafeteria Serunion which is located in both the public and passenger zones and serves typical café food and a Subway that is located in the passenger zone and is open during all civilian flight times. The only perk is that all food items are reasonably priced at the café and the Subway boosts traditional fast food prices. There is not a bar within the airport.

Airport Prices

Prices at the shops are reasonable and you can pick up certain items such as cigarettes at a reasonable price at the duty free shop, however, the selection is extremely limited and it is not likely that outside of these types of items you will find much in the way of gifts or souvenirs. Therefore, it is best to shop for these items outside of the airport before you travel.
